I’m sure different people have different standing points on this but I think higher education is almost farcical these days. Why do people even choose to go to university? It’s like a trend more than an actual purpose in your life. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not undermining degrees, but I definitely think the public is misinformed of the path to take to get to the right career. There are different types of qualifications offering different kinds of value to a potential employer. If you get really bad A Level results and go to a not so great uni, what does that say to a potential employer? Most people are completely unaware that City and Guilds qualifications – generally more vocational based but covering a range of subjects, from photography to cooking to IT – are located all over the world and City and Guilds centers are highly regarded by industry professionals in all sectors covered by their range of qualifications. If the government had any real ability to guide the country, we would see individuals encouraged to study a course best suited to their skills and future, rather than giving everyone a degree which, after three years, means nothing.
